Doctors in Iran Study Botox as Treatment for Tennis Elbow

According to a recent study published in the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association, Botox has potential for treating chronic tennis elbow.

Physicians in Tehran have been researching the use of Botulinum toxin (the active ingredient in Botox Cosmetic) as a treatment for lateral epicondylitis, whatâ??s commonly known as tennis elbow.

A randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted with 48 patients, who were injected with either Botox or saline, the placebo.  Injection sites were customized for each patientâ??s anatomy.

When the injections were performed with anatomic measurements as a guide, they â??significantly reduced pain at restâ? in those who suffer from chronic tennis elbow.  Physicians caution that because of side effects, the treatment may not be appropriate for patients who require finger extension.
